BOARD PRESIDENT, SUPERINTENDENT SPEAK WITH EDUCATION PRACTICUM STUDENTS
September 15, 2023
Godley High School education practicum students heard from Godley ISD school board president Matt McKittrick and Superintendent Dr. Rich Dear during class on September 15, 2023.
Students, who are led by GHS teacher Dana Burke, had the opportunity to ask both guests about the operations of the school district - including challenges such as growth and finances.
A part of the district’s career and technical education programs, the education and training program of study prepares learners for careers related to teaching, instruction and creation of instructional and enrichment programs.
The practicum is the culmination of the pathway of courses with an internship that provides students with background knowledge of child and adolescent development as well as principles of effective teaching and training practices. Students learn to plan and direct individualized instruction and group activities, prepare instructional materials, develop materials for educational environments, assist with record keeping and complete other responsibilities of teachers, trainers, paraprofessionals or other educational personnel.
Some students expressed interest in pursuing a teaching career in Godley. The school district’s “grow your own” initiative helps current paraprofessionals earn college degrees and become certified teachers. The partnership through Teachworthy and Indiana Wesleyan University provides both hands-on experience and on-the-job training. Two recent GHS graduates were hired as paraprofessionals after completing an educator preparation program. Both are pursuing college degrees and certification.
