Science labs for both seventh and eighth grade classes were in full steam at Godley Middle School during the week of October 28, 2024.
Seventh graders engaged in a lesson on insects and then moved on to dissection of frogs. Not only do the students learn lab safety protocols, but the dissections allow students to view the organisms first-hand and get a hands-on look at how all of the frog’s organs and systems work together.
Meanwhile, eighth grade classes completed a hands-on lab about cohesion, adhesion and surface tension. “There was a lot of concentration happening. We saw water over the top of a cup (and not spill), a paperclip float in water and found out how many drops of water will fit on a penny,” said teacher Angie Pinkerton. “The highest number of drops on a penny was 148!”
The lessons cover topics included in the grade-level curriculum. In Texas, seventh graders learn a lot about matter and energy, force and motion, Earth and space, as well as organisms and environment. Eighth graders study recurring patterns and relationships in nature as they learn about systems, cycles, and connections that impact how organisms interact. Students routinely use data and evidence to solve problems and explain their solutions.
