Godley Independent School District - Empowering Students

Second graders at R.B. Godley Elementary School are bringing agriculture into the classroom through Texas Farm Bureau lessons that connect learning across subjects.

Students in Erica Massey’s and Melanie Sukampo’s classes participated in “A is for Apple,” their first cross-curricular lesson of the school year. Students used their five senses to investigate apples, identified and modeled the parts of an apple and discovered how apples are grown.

The lesson also included making applesauce, giving students a hands-on opportunity to explore how an agricultural product becomes a familiar food.

Texas Farm Bureau’s Ag in the Classroom program provides teachers with lessons, activities and other educational resources that connect agriculture to classroom subjects. The resources help students understand food production, natural resources and the role agriculture plays in their everyday lives.

For R.B. Godley students, the apple lesson put those connections into practice as they explored where their food comes from through observation, modeling and food preparation.
