Godley ISD school board trustees received an update on the Mentors Care program during the May 18, 2026, board meeting, highlighting the program’s impact on students through mentorship, relationship-building and support services.

The presentation was led by Managing Director Brian Blackwell, who shared information about the organization’s work supporting students who are struggling with grades, attendance and behavior.

Blackwell said the program served 57 students at Godley High School during the 2025-26 school year with the support of 54 volunteer mentors who provided more than 530 hours of mentoring.

Data presented to the board showed many participating students faced challenges related to academics, behavior, social struggles and adverse childhood experiences. Mentors Care also connected students and families with community resources and additional support services.

According to information shared during the presentation, 56 percent of Mentors Care students reported they did not have a safe person to talk to prior to joining the program. After joining the program, 100 percent of those students reported Mentors Care created a safe space for them.

Mentors Care recently received the Community Impact Award from the Godley Chamber of Commerce in recognition of its work serving students and families in the community.

The Godley Mentors Care team includes Community Engagement Specialist Crystal Meyers and Campus Coordinator Melissa Ormsby.

Godley High School junior Blaze shared a personal testimony about the impact the program has had on his life. He told trustees he came to Godley last year as a repeat freshman and is now on track to graduate on time next year.

“I've been able to truly show others and myself what I am capable of,” Blaze commented.

“I definitely made some mistakes — some I didn't realize were mistakes until someone took the time to talk me through my choices,” Blaze said. “This is exactly what my mentor Matt does for me. He has taken the time out of his very busy life to care about me, my well-being, my grades and my mental health. Someone to show up for me every week.”

Mentors Care is already seeking mentor applications for the 2026-27 school year.
