The Godley Ladycats were champions of the Ladycat Classic held at Godley High School and Middle School on August 26-27, 2022.

Godley won the tourney crown with a victory over Odessa Permian (20-25, 25-22, 25-23) after besting both Brewer (25-20, 25-17) and Paradise (25-19, 25-9) in Saturday’s gold bracket play.

“We knew coming in that winning our own tournament would be a tough task with teams like Brewer, Paschal, Mansfield Timberview, and Permian standing in our way,” commented head coach Courtney Hammett. “But the girls rose to the occasion and came out swinging - literally! They fought and never gave up in the championship match, even when we were down 23-18 in the third set with no timeouts left. My leaders stepped up, and the team did exactly what I asked of them - they refused to lose! They played well in a loud, pressure-filled, playoff-like atmosphere and had a blast doing it!”

During pool play on Friday, the GHS girls defeated Millsap (25-13, 25-11), Azle (25-8, 25-12), and Bridgeport (25-11, 25-18) to advance to the top bracket on Saturday.

Tournament standouts were junior outside hitters Logan Reed and Baylee Mobley.

The varsity squad also includes Ashtin Anglin, Jessica Castillo, Kendall Castor, Bree Hubbard, Catrina Leverett, Kristen Robles, Trinity Roden, Audrey Rodriguez, Brynn Staton, and Bella Van Wart.  Hammett is assisted by Ashley Blue and Rus Mayes, and managers are Michaela Davis and Nina Jimenez.

“We started the season a little rocky while we were figuring out positions and chemistry and trying to fill shoes like Emma Burke,” Hammett said. “But now that we have finally come together as one and found our chemistry, I am very confident looking forward to the rest of this season! We are taking everything one day at a time only focusing on the opponent directly ahead. With Alvarado being our first district match, that will be our main focus going into district play.”

For the 2022 and 2023 seasons, the Ladycats will compete in District 10-4A with Alvarado, Ferris, Hillsboro, Kennedale, Venus, and Waxahachie Life.
