Godley Ladycat softball players joined with their counterparts at Cedar Hill High School to collect LEGOS for a charitable organization during a scrimmage on January 28, 2023.
With the donation collections, the two teams supported LEGOS for Little Warriors, a program that donates LEGOS to children’s hospitals and families in honor of Cleburne native Brody Nelson, who passed away from cancer in 2019. Cedar Hill coach Regis Andrez, who is also from Cleburne, is friends with the Nelson family and started the drive a few years ago.
“We were excited to be given this opportunity to help and jumped at the chance when Coach Andrez asked us to be a part of it,” commented Ladycat head coach Russell Mayes. “We think it’s important to show the girls the importance of giving back and helping others. Hopefully, this will be a yearly tradition and will continue for years to come.”
Giving back was something that had always been on Brody’s mind while he was sick, according to the Cleburne Times-Review. To keep himself busy during hospital stays, he played with LEGOS and told his mom that every child in the hospital deserves something to play with.
Brody launched LEGOS for Little Warriors and donated thousands of kits to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Cook Children’s Hospital, the radiation center where he conducted his treatments and the Children’s Advocacy Center of Johnson County.
