Godley High School health science practicum classes helped choose a new name for a Bronch robot used in lung biopsy procedures by Texas Health Resources.

The Texas Health robotic system, Ion, is designed to access difficult to reach areas of the lung. Guided by the physician, the robot uses a pre-planned navigation path to help guide an ultra-thin catheter to a lesion, which is a round or oval shaped growth in the lung that appears on a CT scan.

Of all the proposed names submitted, Navioma was the winner, according to Morgan Reynolds, a physician liaison at Texas Health Huguley Hospital in Burleson.  Both Reynolds and oncology nurse navigator Julissa Escamilla challenged the students during a session in early February by explaining the robotic mission and ways it is improving health care for lung patients.

Health science is among career and technical education programs in The WILD, the new four-story CTE center housing numerous programs with over 40 classrooms, learning spaces and student-led enterprises.  Classrooms include a model clinic and model doctor’s office as well as a science lab complete for real-world training.

The program of study introduces students to occupations and educational opportunities related to diagnosing and treating acute, episodic, or chronic illness independently or as part of a healthcare team. This program of study also includes an introduction to the opportunities associated with providing treatment and counsel to patients as well as rehabilitative programs that help build or restore daily living skills to persons with disabilities or developmental delays.

The four-year sequence of courses begins with a principles class serving as an orientation and foundation for occupations and functions in any health care profession.  A second introductory course focuses on medical terminology, including symbols, abbreviations and the application of this language in the health care field.

Advanced courses include health science theory and clinical, which provides hands-on learning in areas such as clinical lab practices, emergency medical technician, forensics, mental health, nursing, pharmacology, sports medicine and veterinary medicine.  Students can also take anatomy and physiology to study the structure and function of the human body.  Kinesiology classes are also available.

Upper-level students can gain advanced knowledge through practicums in health science or kinesiology.  Students can also earn certifications as a patient care technician, EMT (basic), EKG/ECG technician or certified personal trainer.
