Twelve students and 13 entries received medals at the contest featuring schools from the western portion of the Region 11 education service area.

Chou is an exchange student from Taiwan.  Her watercolor and ink entry is entitled “Welcome from Strangers.”

Medalists were:

  • Art 1:  Capucine Demant, Braley Lee

  • Art 2:  Kyle Back, Angela Gonzalez, S’maj Lewis, Ellie Navarro, Yovanna Oviedo, Brooklyn Royal, Marley Samuels

  • Art 3:  Trinity Lively, Jesley Wilson

  • Art 4:  Ying Chou (two entries)

The mission of the VASE is to recognize exemplary student achievement in the visual arts by providing high school art students and programs a standard of excellence in which to achieve.

Founded in 1996, VASE challenges students to create artwork, write about their creative processes and understanding of visual art, and articulate information about their artwork during an interview with a VASE juror, who evaluates their work using a standards-based rubric. Academically eligible high school students in grades 9-12 from throughout Texas can participate in VASE, entered by teachers who are members in good standing with TAEA.

The state contest is Apr. 26-27 at San Marcos High School.
