Godley High School submitted student enrollment data for the University Interscholastic League’s biennial reclassification and realignment process on October 27, 2023.
The official number for Godley is 827 students - up 16% from 712 submitted in 2021. This aligns with the school district’s fast-growth rate, which exceeds the state average, showing GISD enrollment increasing eight percent annually.
The UIL will use the numbers to reclassify schools for academic, athletic, music and spirit competitions as well as to realign districts for the 2024-26 biennium. That announcement will be made in early February 2024.
“Competition is always challenging regardless of classification, and we hope to offer students the opportunity to learn character, leadership and sportsmanship regardless of the class or district that we are assigned,” commented GHS Principal Kurtis Flood.
Godley currently is in Class 4A. The Wildcats compete in Class 4A Division II for football only.
For the current classification structure in place for the 2022-24 biennium, Class 4A is composed of 213 schools with student populations between 545 and 1,299. For football, Division II includes schools with enrollment between 545 and 879 students, while Division I comprises those with 880-1,299 students. 5A schools are those with 1,300-2,224 students, while Class 6A includes those with 2,225 students and above.
“We will likely remain in Class 4A and compete one more biennium in Division II for football,” said Superintendent Dr. Rich Dear. “Our student groups already compete at a very high level, and we are confident that our athletic teams, band, academic team and cheerleaders will continue to find success.”
The UIL, a division of the University of Texas at Austin, is the rulemaking body for educational extracurricular contests in Texas public schools. The league aims to provide healthy, character-building, educational activities carried out under rules providing for good sportsmanship and fair play for all participants.
