Godley Middle School students got into the Halloween spirit while exploring science through hands-on experiments during the week of October 27, 2025.

Carey Penney’s 8th-grade science classes rotated through eight lab stations, investigating physical and chemical changes. Students observed dirty pennies being cleaned, eggs dissolving before their eyes, and watched ivory soap expand into a foam resembling a giant marshmallow. Steel wool sparked like tiny fireworks, and many other exciting transformations gave students a vivid look at science in action. The lesson ended on a glowing note, as students learned what makes glowsticks shine and took one home to demonstrate the reaction themselves.

Meanwhile, Angie Pinkerton’s 8th graders added a spooky twist to their chemistry studies. Using a “Bloody Hand” demonstration, students explored acids, bases, and neutralization. As the reaction reached its neutral point, a red handprint appeared on their plate, turning a fun Halloween activity into a memorable science lesson.

“Experiencing science hands-on helps students connect what they learn in class to the world around them,” said Godley Middle School Principal Stephanie Wynne. “These experiments spark curiosity, encourage critical thinking, and make learning unforgettable.”

The Halloween-themed labs offered a unique opportunity for students to engage with science, explore chemical reactions safely, and have fun while learning.
