Godley High School tennis teams competed at the District 10-4A tournament on March 30-31, 2023, at Alvarado High School with both varsity boys and junior varsity girls finishing as district runners-up.

Varsity results at the district tourney were:

  • Boys Doubles:  Jackson Harry and Lucas Mullins, 1st (regional qualifiers)

  • Girls Doubles:  Natalie Jackson and Caitlyn White, 3rd (regional alternates)

  • Mixed Doubles:  Jordan Downe and Taylor Martin, 3rd (regional alternates)

For the junior varsity, results were:

  • Boys Singles:  Matis Mezger, 1st

  • Girls Singles:  Ahla Ayesha, 2nd

  • Girls Doubles:  Taylor Brooks and Kaidence Hulsey, 2nd

“In the face of a lot of adversity and struggling with growing pains and with very few practices, the varsity and JV teams did very well at our district meet,” coaches said.  “There was a lot of progress made in JV level of play. Varsity tennis played a lot of opponents at much larger schools (some 5A and 6A) leading up to the tournament, and it tremendously helped them hone their skills and walk into district with confidence.”

Coaches noted that Austin Steward, a past regional qualifier, finished fourth in boys singles competition, falling just shy of third place after a hard fought battle with a very well matched opponent from Kennedale.

Varsity team members were Mackenzie Boyd, Orion Braudaway, Jordan Downe, Brenda Gerrado, Jackson Harry, Natalie Jackson, Semaj Johnson, Zion Johnson, Taylor Martin, Lucas Mullins, Alyssa Ortega, Victoria Paliz, Austin Steward and Caitlyn White.

The JV squad included Ahla Ayesha, Braden Blincoe, Taylor Brooks, Kash Fultz, Jackson Hughes, Kaidence Hulsey and Mathis Mezger.  Ayesha and Mezger are both foreign exchange students from Pakistan and Germany respectively.

The Region II-4A tournament is set for Apr. 11-12 at Longview High School.

Head coach Jon Jones is assisted by Liz Miles.
