Godley High School students earned statewide recognition at the UIL State Film Festival on February 25, 2026, at the Austin ISD Performing Arts Center, highlighted by a top-five finish in the documentary category.
“I Feel Like I Can Tough It Out” was named a state finalist — one of six in the Class 4A documentary division — and placed fifth overall.
The documentary shares the story of Collyns Hutson, a young girl living with the rare genetic illness hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT). Through interviews with her family, school and medical team, the film highlights her strength, daily challenges and the love and resilience that surround her. The documentary includes interviews with Collyns; her parents, Cody and Amanda Hutson; school nurse Amanda Ponce; and Dr. Lam Fong.
Student credits for the film include Jake Phillips, director and editor, and Talan Roever, co-director and director of photography.
In the narrative category, “The Honest Hour” advanced to the state semifinals in Class 4A and placed seventh overall. The dramatic short film was created by Mya Arevalo, Braylen Knott, Isabelle Ortega and Ben Rosser and showcases student talent in storytelling, performance and cinematic production.
Rounding out the state qualifiers, “A Man Without Fear” placed 12th in the Class 4A documentary division. Produced by Landon Brady, Leo Mendoza and Isaac Tello, the documentary tells the story of Matt Buyten, a motocross rider who was paralyzed following an injury last year. Through thoughtful interviews with Buyten and his wife, Krystal, and compelling storytelling, the film highlights perseverance and determination in the face of life-changing adversity.
All three projects were produced under the leadership of GHS audio/visual teacher Ryan Tuomey.
The UIL State Film Festival provides Texas high school students the opportunity to showcase their work in narrative and documentary filmmaking, recognizing excellence in directing, cinematography, editing and storytelling.
“With three films advancing to state competition — including a top-five finish — Wildcat Media continues to demonstrate the strength of our career and technical education programs and its commitment to student creativity and achievement,” Principal Kurtis Flood said.
