A Godley High School team was the innovative design champion at the Aerial Robotics in STEM Education (ARISE) competition on April 15, 2023, at the Dallas International School.
The "Godley Squadron" includes students Willie Carter, Zion Johnson, Jamilla Sherman, Kaymarria Sherman and Tim Sherman.
The group was assisted by upperclassmen from a manufacturing practicum course who directly helped with construction. These consultants were Ethan Hall, Romello Jordan and Jay Swiger.
“They didn't score the most points or win the overall championship, but they did bring home the innovative design award,” commented GHS teacher and team sponsor Erik Walla. “While they may have crashed a few times, they did have a lot of fun, and they might have even learned something along the way.”
At GHS, the Introduction to Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Flight course is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment of continuing education in piloting UAV operations. The class is designed to instruct students in UAV flight navigation, industry laws and regulations and safety regulations. Students are also exposed to mission planning procedures, environmental factors and human factors involved in the UAV industry.
