Godley High School junior Makenna Carter, a four-year agriculture student and member of the Godley FFA, raised a heifer that recently gave birth to a baby calf.

In just her second year showing cattle, Carter gained a lot of experience with the project - ranging from not only breeding the heifer but also making a feeding plan and then working and handling a large animal. Driving Carter is her love for what veterinarians experience in their real-world careers.

“This experience has been something that has helped me grow as a person,” Carter commented.  “From helping and witnessing her being artificially inseminated, and then being given the hands-on opportunity to do the pregnancy check and feel the baby - which was about the size of a golf ball at the time - to having this bull calf be born and truly seeing this project come full circle.”

GHS ag teacher Lacey Bennett praised the student. “This is a great example of our FFA motto, ‘Learning to do, doing to learn.’  Makenna acquired this heifer project and for two years has made this into an experience that will last a lifetime.”

“This time of learning made me realize my love for cattle as well as the Red Angus breed and how I want to possibly continue with it after high school,” Carter said.

Mother and calf are doing well.
