Concussion Information for Parents
A concussion is a type of mild traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body that can temporarily affect brain function. It’s important to recognize the signs and symptoms early to ensure your student-athlete receives proper care and recovers safely.
Common signs and symptoms of a concussion include:
- Headache or feeling of pressure in the head
- Dizziness or balance problems
- Nausea or vomiting
- Confusion, feeling “foggy,” or difficulty concentrating
- Sensitivity to light or noise
- Blurred or double vision
- Feeling tired, sluggish, or drowsy
- Changes in mood, irritability, or sadness
- Trouble remembering recent events or new information
Red flags – seek emergency medical care immediately if your child experiences:
- Loss of consciousness (even briefly)
- Severe or worsening headache
- Repeated vomiting
- Seizures or convulsions
- Difficulty waking up or extreme drowsiness
- Weakness, numbness, or decreased coordination
- Slurred speech or difficulty speaking
- Confusion or unusual behavior
If you suspect your child has a concussion, keep them out of physical activities and seek
evaluation by a trained concussion healthcare professional, specifically a medical doctor
(MD) or doctor of osteopathy (DO), who is experienced in concussion management.
We recommend utilizing Texas Orthopaedic Associates Clinic for concussion evaluation and
treatment. They have offices in:
- Fort Worth: (817) 529-1900
- Weatherford: (817) 594-6493
When you call, please inform them that your child is a Godley ISD student-athlete.
Student-athletes must be medically cleared by a qualified healthcare professional before
returning to sports to prevent further injury.
Always report any head injury to the athletic trainer or school personnel immediately so your child can be properly monitored and supported.
Concussion Protocol
Godley ISD is committed to the safety and long-term health of all student-athletes. In the event of a suspected concussion, we follow a structured protocol in accordance with UIL and state guidelines to ensure proper care and a safe return to play.
Please see the full Godley ISD Concussion Protocol, which outlines the steps for evaluation, physician clearance, academic accommodations, and the return-to-play
progression.
If you have any questions about concussion management, please contact the athletic trainer.
Return to Play Concussion Form
Once your student-athlete has completed the appropriate concussion protocol for returning to sport, a parent or guardian must sign and return the UIL Return to Play Concussion Form before the athlete can fully resume participation.
This form will be sent home with your student-athlete. If it gets lost, you can download it and either send it back with your athlete or email it directly to Nichole Harmon at
nicholeharmon@godleyisd.net.
