The minutes from the 3/29/06 were read. Questions were answered for the new attendees.
Team Nutrition, a program from the USDA. There are no fees to use this program. We are required to use their resources if we ask for them. The program has posters, banners, and other materials for K-6th grades. They do not have anything for grades 7-12. Coach Weese at GHS is the health teacher and has put his own program together.
Penny has talked to Monica Irvin, GISD Executive Director of Finance, about the budget for SHAC. SHAC is not for one campus, it will benefit and include the entire school district. Monica will present the budget to the board. The budget will be broken down and looked at completely. The budget will be looked at in the June or July board meeting. If and when the budget is approved, we will set up appointments to have the speakers from AIM come to the district for inservice. These and other recommendations will be presented to Mr. Smithson, superintendent GISD, by Vicki Bryant.
At the April board meeting, the board approved the SHAC and discussed it and Penny Chesshir answered their questions. The SHAC plan was passed out in binders. We will be able to post meeting dates on the web page. Pat Bonds and Brooke Davenport of Johnson County Committee Health Task Force called Penny about the SHAC. Penny explained it to them. They said they had grant money and were looking for a program that is being implemented and has a growing plan. Penny will keep in touch to see if we will qualify for that money.
The GISD Food Services will be experimenting at the Elementary School with food choices. They want to offer a fruit and vegetable choice for next year. They will also possibly give the students a choice of having a hot meal or a sandwich tray. They will make sure hat next year they will have 5 items from the nutrition food list.
Many topics were discussed and many recommendations were made. The recommendations will be listed separately at the end of the minutes.
* One of the topics was putting recess back into the Intermediate School. It was discussed that it will help give more movement to the younger children. Although they do have a regular PE time, the recess is unstructured and will give the students extra running and movement time. The unstructured recess time will also help the students to make their own choices in activity. PE is a structured time and requires them to do formal exercises and running. Recess will give back the opportunity to make a choice in their activities and strengthen their social skills.
* It was recommended that the Elementary school not allow candy to be sold to the Elementary students. It was suggested that if it is necessary to raise extra money from snack sales, the choices are healthy choices instead. The candy money is used to pay for end of the year fun activities. In the past, they have brought in the bouncy water slides. There was a question as to why the PTO isn't paying for this activity. Also, if PTO isn't able to afford this, why aren't parents being asked to bring a nominal fee? The group felt there could be a better solution to raising money besides selling candy filled with sugar to the students.
* The PE teacher at the Elementary school weighs and measures the students at the beginning of the year. She then turns this in to the school Nurse for her records. It was suggested that the Intermediate and Middle Schools continue this practice up to 6th grade. At one point, the weight and measurements can be sent home to parents AFTER we have already sent home information on the weight and measurements of the average child the same age. Since PE teachers have to include a health lesson at the very least once a month, this could be tied into the lesson. The Elementary PE teacher teaches from the State mandated TEKS. Terri Good loe has a handbook about Health and Nutrition from the Dairy Council for use at any level.
* Penny has already supplied the principals with pamphlets about healthy nutrition. We need to follow up and see if the teachers have sent this information home with the students or if it will be going out before school is out.
* Another problem seen throughout the district is the start time of schools. It isn't necessarily the start time, but the time the schools are allowing late students to eat breakfast. The Elementary opens their doors at 7:40. We think the tardy bell at the Elementary school rings at 8:15. The doors at the Intermediate open at 7:30, the tardy bell rings at 8:10. The Elementary students are taken to their campus after the Intermediate students are dropped off. The doors for the buses were observed opening at 8:50. The problem with this is that there is no one left in the cafeteria at 8:15 to feed the Elementary students breakfast when they come in late. The students are sent to class without breakfast. The cafeteria doors at the Elementary are closed at 8:00. It will be recommended that the Elementary cafeteria doors stay open until 8:15 and the receptionist/secretary checking in late students send them for breakfast until 8:15, if they usually eat at the school. This bus schedule is also causing problems with the High School. Right now, the students that don't eat breakfast go to their classroom. About 40% of the students that eat breakfast are bus riders. If there is a child that comes late, they HAVE to be fed and are required 15 minutes to eat breakfast, this is a state requirement. The students are to be allowed 20 minutes to eat lunch.
Recommendations that will be taken to Mr. Smithson:
* If the budget for SHAC is approved, schedule Aim For Success to be taught/presented to the teachers during the scheduled In-Service (August 15-August 19)
* All campuses open their doors and the doors of the cafeteria at 7:30 a.m.
* Each campus serves breakfast until the tardy bell rings
* Keep the cafeteria doors open 15 minutes after the tardy bell rings for the late students
* Breakfast needs to be offered to the late students at ALL campuses
* No candy sales at all, on any campuses
* If snacks are to be offered for sale, offer 100% juice, healthier choice of snacks, i.e. pretzels, cheese crackers, gold fish. Little Debbie snacks are state
approved and low fat.
* If snacks are going to continue to be sold at the Elementary, send a price list and list of choices home to the parents so the decision can be made at home
* The Intermediate school reinstate a 20 minute recess for grades 3 - 5
* Start a Health class in 8th grade that can be accepted for High School credit so we don't have an overwhelming amount of students in High School needing it all
at once
* Have the weighing and measuring of students carry over to the Intermediate grades 3-5 and into 6th grade for the Middle School
Next meeting: August/September 2006 when recommendations for the budget have been approved or not approved. Pam Mantooth will be looking at the TEKS and curriculum that will help the Intermediate and Middle Schools PE teachers for the 2005-2007 school year.
We will need to meet in early August if the budget is approved to purchase Aim For Success curriculum. We will also have to schedule the speakers early.
