Opening discussion:
Penny noted new rules for food served at school functions and distributed the 2007-2008 Texas Public School Nutrition Policy at a Glance brochure. She also noted the Godley ISD policy of no candy sales on any campus. There were a few questions about various what-if scenarios, and the committee members agreed to help spread awareness of these rules.
First topic: TASK Abstinence Education Program
Penny spoke with Mr. Smithson about putting TASK implementation on the next available Board Meeting agenda. Mr. Smithson noted that it would probably be better to wait until April or May when the Board could give the item greater attention.
Upon discussion, it was noted that the Burleson Pregnancy Aid Center representative needed two weeks notice to prepare for the program, and the program itself would take three weeks to roll out to the targeted grades. Consequently, it could not by any means be in place by Prom (which was an initial goal). But several committee members expressed a strong desire to have this program in place before the end of the school year, and preferably before ‘spring fever’ set in too strongly. Waiting until April or May for initial Board approval would make this goal very difficult to reach. Terrie Goodloe volunteered to request that TASK be put on the upcoming Board agenda, noting the busy Board schedule. {Update, Mr. Smithson agreed to put TASK on the March 24 Board agenda, confirmed 2/13/08}
The point was raised that this type of abstinence program would function much more effectively as an ‘opt-out’ rather than ‘opt-in’ program, noting the difficulty of getting parental approval, especially for kids seen most at risk. It will be requested to make TASK an ‘opt-out’ program.
Finally, Terrie requested that SHAC make a donation to the Burleson Pregnancy Center to support their work, noting that the program is free-of-charge. Vicki moved to donate $500; Keri seconded. {Update, it was confirmed that SHAC cannot make such a donation due to financial regulations, 2/13/08}
Second topic: Health Updates
Penny promoted the website, bodybymilk.com.
She noted that 41% of 1511 district students qualify for free or reduced lunches. At the elementary school, that number is 56%. However, if it should climb to 60% (at any one campus), the district is obligated to provide free breakfast and lunch throughout the summer. This raised several logistical concerns including staffing and transportation. Penny will continue to look into these regulations.
Finally, she related that campus health inspections have gone extremely well, saying that our district is regularly praised for its cleanliness and good practices. The only finding reported was a single sink that did not have hot water.
Third topic: Dance mats
Juliandra showed some different dance mat options that came in a range of prices and accessories. It was noted that the intermediate school is ready for PE options beyond dodgeball. The question was raised, how would we implement new PE centers, including dance mats? It was agreed that we should work from the ‘top-down’ inviting coaches and principles for the intermediate and middle schools to our next meeting to discuss the entire idea. Informally, the coaches and assistants aware of the idea have been interested. They would have better ideas about the specific needs and numbers for such a PE program. {It has since been confirmed that SHAC has about $1500 to spend, and PTAs are been willing to donate to the cause}
On a final note, potential new PE regulations were mentioned in which all kids through middle school would be required to participate in 30 minutes of PE every day. Currently the middle school requires PE every other day, depending on grade. This would have a significant impact on middle school scheduling.
The next meeting was scheduled for April 8 at 8:30.
Respectfully submitted, Matt Ward
